Baby, as soon as one reads this word one can notice a smile on their face. Everyone loves to hold babies. It is said from ancient times “Babies and Gods are Equal” since they do not lie. They bring happiness to the family since they are newly born or new to the World.

An Infant is a formal synonym for baby. It is from the Latin term ‘infans’ indicating unable to speak’ or ‘speechless’. Infants referred to call other organisms too.

In medical context, the term ‘Fetus’ used before birth; the word ‘newborn’ refers to the infant for the first 28 days from birth. The term ‘Infant’ varies to the children under one or two years of age. The term ‘Toddlers’ is given to the children as soon as they start to walk.

Let us see some astonishing facts about Babies :

Babies are Cute and filled with curiosities. A Baby can brighten up the home; make you feel light when you are depressed.

  • Father’s sperm determines the sex of the newborn.
  • A baby can differentiate the number of objects (1,2,3) placed in front of it. They can identify if one object taken away unexpectedly says American Psychologists.
  • A baby starts to listen even before its birth. A two days young baby recognizes the mother’s voice.
  • When a baby cries, one cannot see the tears rolling down until 1 to 3 months. For some babies it takes even four to five months. Stress tears are unique to people. Tear ducts produce only enough water to lubricate the eyes with no excess water to roll down.

  • When a newborn placed onto the mothers’ stomach right after the birth, it starts to crawl slowly to the mother’s breast to nurse, says Norwegian Scientists.
  • For the first three months, the baby can see only the things, which are 8 to 12 inches (20cm to 30cm) away. The perfect distance to see mothers face while holding and feeding.
  • A baby can recognize the tone and responds accordingly.
  • The baby’s sense of hearing starts to determine where the sound is coming from in 10 minutes after birth.
  • The baby takes 5 to 10 minutes to recognize the new environment right after its birth.
  • A baby has nearly 70 reflexes.
  • The development of a sense of touch starts from the head and ends in the toe. The most sensitive touch receptors are in and around their mouth; this is the reason why the babies put the things in their mouth. The babies respond to touch when it is 25 weeks older.

  • The babies as young as 7 months old can understand other people’s behaviour.
  • Babies take about 3 months to adjust the environment outside the womb. The circulatory system is still in the developing stage, so the fingers and toes are cold. The hands and feet are the last part to get a  good supply of blood.
  • Half of the head growth occurs in the first 12 months and the remaining half grows in the next 17 years.
  • Naptime or sleeping boosts babies memory power. A mid-day sleep helps to increases the memory power.
  • The Baby's eyes are 70% - 75% of their adult size. The length of the newborn is about 16.5mm and that of an adult is 24mm.
  • Babies have 300 bones. Babies have more cartilage than bones. When the babies grow, the cartilage turns into bones and thus the bones count becomes 206.
  • Babies are born with nearly 30000 taste buds all over their tongue, including tonsils, sides, roof, and the throat. An average adult has 10000 taste buds.
  • A newborn can taste sweet, bitter, and sour not salty (around 5 months).
  • Babies start hearing moms’ voices and other sounds from about 23rd weeks of pregnancy.
  • Babies are born with innate talents in swimming.
  • Babies learn faster than adults do.
  • The newborn's/babies stomach is the size of the walnut.
  • Babies do not have kneecaps. The cartilages develop into kneecaps only after 6 months.
  • Heartbeat: Newborn has 180 beats per minute at birth; 140 beats within a few hours; 115 beats per minute untill they reach 1 year. Then it becomes normal 70 – 80 beats per minute.
  • On normal infants, laugh 300 times a day.

  • The breathing rate of the baby is 40 times per minute while the adult ranges from 15 – 20.
  • Baby is born without any bacteria on their body; they have only a cup of blood in their body at birth.
  • Babies do not dream for a few years.
  • At the time of birth, baby has nearly more than 10million nerve cells in their brain.
  • The highest officially recorded number of children born to one mother is 69 between the years 1725-1765. The wife of Feodor Vassilyev (1707-1782) peasant from Russia, in 27 gestations (birth) she gave birth to 16 pairs of twins, 7 sets of triplets, and 4 sets of quadruplets.
  • Human infants are the only species ‘smiles’ at their parents.
  • Infantile amnesia: the baby does not remember the things, which happened until 3 years.
  • Motherese: Babies prefer to hear female voices, more comfortable to the  mother’s voice. They also like to hear high pitch sound.
  • Left-hander or Right-hander is determined at around10 weeks from the baby birth.       

CONCLUSION

The precious gift from God is Baby (Babies). They are born with many innate talents, it is the parent’s responsibility to shape or mould them and develop them to achieve something in their life by supporting, guiding, and standing with them all through their tough situations. Encourage the child even if he/she does anything wrong by correcting their mistake in their slang (way).
